What are custom mouthguards?

A custom mouthguard is a protective guard made from an impression of your own teeth, so it fits your mouth rather than being one-size-fits-all.

It sits over your upper teeth and gums during sport. Because it’s formed to your mouth, it stays in place, so you can breathe, talk and concentrate on the game.

We make custom vacuum-formed, single laminate (single layer) mouthguards, every one made in-house in our workshop.

What a custom mouthguard does for you

  • Tooth protection: helps guard against chipped, cracked or knocked-out teeth.
  • Soft tissue protection: cushions your lips, cheeks and gums from cuts and bruising.
  • Fit: a close fit means less bulk and less need to clench to hold it in.
  • Breathing and speech: a well-fitted guard makes it easier to breathe and call out on the field.
  • Fun: kids pick their own colours, including team colours and sparkly options.

Who are custom mouthguards good for?

Most of the mouthguards we make are for children playing sport, and adults are welcome too.

Some families come back every year. One has been coming since 2020, and another brings in all three kids. A custom mouthguard may be a good fit if:

  • Your child plays junior sport: especially contact sport, or sport with a ball, stick or bat.
  • They’ve grown since last season: last year’s guard no longer fits.
  • The current guard doesn’t fit well: it feels bulky, falls out, or makes it hard to breathe or talk.
  • You play sport yourself: adults get the same custom fit.

Things to mention when you book

  • Braces or orthodontic work: teeth that are moving may need a different approach.
  • Dentures or missing teeth: We can plan the mouthguard around any gaps or removable teeth.

What type of mouthguard do we make?

We make one type of mouthguard: custom vacuum-formed, single laminate.

Single laminate mouthguards

A single layer of protective material, formed over a model of your teeth. It’s slim and light, which makes it comfortable to wear for a whole game.

  • Fit: made from an impression of your teeth.
  • Made: in-house, in our workshop.

Mouthguards for kids

Children’s mouths are still growing, so a mouthguard that fits this season may not fit next season. Many families book a new one each year before the season starts.

  • Fit: made from an impression of your child’s current teeth.
  • Growth: a new guard each season keeps the fit right.

The custom mouthguard process

A custom mouthguard takes two appointments: an impression, then a fit.

Plan ahead of the season, so your mouthguard is ready before the first game.

  • Your mouth: We check the teeth and note any braces, gaps or dentures.
  • Impression: we place an impression tray over the teeth for a short time.
  • Colours: you pick your colours from the chart.
  • Forming: We form the mouthguard over a model of the teeth.
  • Trimming: we shape the edges so the guard covers what it needs to without extra bulk.
  • Finishing: we smooth the guard so it feels comfortable against the gums and cheeks.
  • Fit check: We make sure the guard stays in place without biting down.
  • Comfort check: we adjust any areas that rub or press there and then.
  • Care instructions: you’ll learn how to clean and store the mouthguard.
  • Rinse after every use: clean it after each game or training session.
  • Store it properly: keep it in a vented case and away from direct heat, which can warp it.
  • Check the fit: come back if it wears or stops fitting, and each new season for kids.

How much do custom mouthguards cost?

We’ll talk you through cost when you book. Depending on your extras cover, you may be able to claim on the spot.

What affects the cost

  • Number of mouthguards: for one child, or the whole family.

Ways to pay

We’re upfront about cost once we’ve seen you, and there are a few ways to manage it:

  • Health funds: we accept all major health funds and claim on the spot with HICAPS, so you only pay the gap.
  • MediPay payment plans: spread the cost over instalments, so you can go ahead with the right treatment rather than a compromise.

We accept all health funds

We work with all major health insurance providers, so you can claim toward your treatment on the spot with HICAPS.

Mouthguard FAQs

If your question isn’t covered here, call or text and we’ll answer it.

A custom mouthguard is made from an impression of your teeth, so it fits your mouth closely instead of loosely following the shape like a generic or boil-and-bite guard.

Two. We take an impression at the first and fit the mouthguard at the second.

Yes. Choose from a wide range of colours, including team colours and sparkly options.

Kids’ mouths change as they grow, so a mouthguard that fitted last season may not fit now. Many of our families come back every year before the season starts.

Rinse it after every use, store it in a vented case, and keep it out of direct heat, which can warp it.
